About

On the 17th June 2026 Lowood arts returns.

Between 2026 and 2028, Lowood arts will explore and define itself through the experience of its first 4 exhibitions.

Lowood will create conversations between artworks, expose tensions, and challenge what it means to experience works of art.

Lowood will be testing every aspect of its structure and new team. Pushing ourselves to the limits and learning what we can achieve. Discovering the limits of what we can imagine.

Almost every physical and theoretical reality for us is different from almost every other art space. This is our reality, not a choice. Time will provide us with a platform within which we can create something unique - a space for reflection on the nature that is outside our doors.

Our first exhibition eden elegy will be an exploration of Place. Defined by memory and imagination. Every work and artist has been chosen for a reason. We want to experience how the work affects the viewer in our new Lowood arts space, how it engenders conversation between the other works, the viewer and the space it reveals itself in.

We have no plan except to be a reflection on every aspect of our existence over the coming formative years. Through the work of Turner prize artists to Student Graduates, we will explore the interconnectedness of man in nature. Informing our practice and allowing us to create a space which will celebrate the possibility of emotional experience through art.

For a new gallery, our next two years are incredible. We are beyond excited. This will create the centre we can reach out from.

An archive of truly gifted British artists' work has been collected and loaned to Lowood arts over the past 5 years. In 2027, the archive will run alongside the new gallery space, helping us understand how we connect to our place in arts history. In contrast, our future summer shows. A planned northern graduate exhibition and a Nature/Rural Open exhibition will reveal our interconnectivity to our present communities and reinforce our future direction.

The result of our introspection will allow us to challenge our own existence as our visitors do the same. Place, identity, gender, culture, society, community, family, politics, media, spirituality will become our office, and we invite you all to visit and learn through experiencing art a little bit more about yourself and your journey as we journey with you. Its exciting; we don’t know where we are going. We know where we were! We know what we are! We are excited to see what we become.

Every interaction will be collated, every success and failure noted, informing our relationship with the gallery space and the natural world it lives in. We will keep throwing stones into the water and see how far the ripples go. We will keep pushing ourselves to the limits to create the conditions for our viewers to experience something special. Building a space that belongs to nature will require time to understand our connection to the environment and our relationship with nature.

Time passes differently in a natural context. Always a part of its history but at the mercy of change. Transient in and by nature, permanent by the layers of time and history it is built upon. Lowood arts challenge is to understand the 4,000 years of artistic history it is connected to and engender an artistic experience worthy of the art on its walls and the viewers coming to experience it.
